Suggestions for Placing Eye Drops

Topical eye drops are the mainstay for treatment of multiple eye conditions. However, if you haven't had to place eye drops before, learning how to properly place the drops can be difficult. Here are a few tips:

  1.  Pull down the lower lid to form a “pocket” with one hand
  2. Hold the eye dropper with the other hand over the eye. You can brace it on your forehead, nose, or cheek if needed.
  3. Squeeze one drop in to the lower lid “pocket” and try initially not to blink, rub, or wipe the eye. Also avoid touching the bottle tip to the eye or face.
  4. For best results, you can then gently close the lid and place your index finger on the lower lid near the nose for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Don't be afraid to ask for help from someone else if needed.

There are also “drop assist devices” available over-the-counter that attach to your eye drop bottle and can help in directing drop placement. If you're still having difficulty, talk with your eye physician or come in for a free screening to learn additional tips.
